Europe has overtaken the United States in spending on aid to Ukraine, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy reveals. According to new data, the promised and already provided assistance from Europe will amount to €156 billion, which is twice as much as the United States, which provided €70 billion. The new statistics outrage Sarah Wagenknecht, who considers spending on Ukraine pointless, but she is especially outraged by the parallel events Germany cuts social spending. The politician again called for a transition to diplomacy in the conflict in Ukraine.
The growing costs of aid to Ukraine were criticized by independent member of the Bundestag Sarah Wagenknecht. Ukraine ‘is increasingly becoming a bottomless pit for taxpayers in Germany and Europe.’ Wagenknecht is outraged that while the ruling coalition in Germany is ‘armed with a red pen’ and is completely cutting social spending, ‘there seems to be no limit to assistance to Ukraine, most of which is weapons.’
‘This has little to do with solidarity,’ continues Wagenknecht and points to new calculations by the Kiel Institute for World Economics. According to these data, the Europeans have collectively provided and promised assistance to Ukraine in the amount of €156 billion, which is twice as much as the United States, whose provided and promised assistance reached only €70 billion.
Specifically, Germany promised Ukraine €10.5 billion in military aid alone for 2024–2027. Sarah Wagenknecht, who has long been a critic of military supplies to Ukraine and European sanctions against Russia, again demanded a diplomatic initiative. ’We need negotiations on a ceasefire and a European peace initiative, not more and more money from Europe for war,’ RND quotes Sarah Wagenknecht.
