For the last four years The Voluntary English Teaching Group has been providing free tuition to unemployed Spanish residents in Javea. These courses, facilitated by the town hall, the Help desk and Creama the unemployment office, are designed to enable the local community to speak English and/or German to improve their chances of employment in this multi-cultural region.
On the 30th April Javea’s Deputy Mayor Oscar Anton and Juan Luis Cardona Councillor with responsibility for Creama, presented certificates to the students who had successfully completed a 100 hour English course with exam.
The attached group photograph shows Oscar Anton and Juan Luis Cardona with the teachers and students after the award ceremony at the Casa de Cultura in Javea town, this was followed by drinks and tapas in a local cafe.
The smaller photograph shows Oscar Anton, Juan Luis Cardona and Carlos Criollo, a student who, having attended courses at pre- intermediate and intermediate level, achieved a pass in both and was awarded a certificate for each level.
The Deputy Mayor said how pleased he was with the results of the various courses and has pledged money to obtain more teaching equipment and books for future courses.
The Voluntary Group are always happy to meet with anyone interested in joining this important project, especially English speakers with an intermediate level of Spanish and a level of English grammar, however volunteers are always welcome to help in the conversation classes and in the grammar classes.
