Pego Golf Society – Oliva Nova September 20th

Due to extensive course works at Oliva Nova, this week’s competition, in stableford format, was held at the recently opened La Galiana Golf Course near Tavernes de la Valldigna, where we received a very warm welcome. The course is set in stunning mountainous surroundings with many spectacular holes and incredibly challenging greens and was worth a ride round (no way could you walk it!) for the pure delight of the setting (and many of us might just as well have just ridden around!). As you would expect with a new course, it will take a little while yet for it to mature but nobody could be less than delighted with their investment of 40 or so Euros for this outstanding ocular experience.

We had a very good turnout for an away day with 29 members making the trip plus our five guests – Jayne and Jim Leith, Jackie & Nick Henderson and John Day – and we were unanimous in our positive impressions of the course (despite the fairly widespread hair raising escapades with our buggies on the more severe slopes!).

There were two prize categories this week and the winners were announced by our Captain, Jim Gillies, as follows:

Category 1 (Handicaps up to 18.4)

Winner – Andrew Harrison with a superb 40 stableford points off a handicap of 11.6

Runner up – Mike Phillips with 36 points off 14.9

Third – Jim Gillies with 35 points off 13.5

Category 2 (Handicaps over 18.4)

Winner – Chris Brookes with an excellent 39 points off 18.9

Runner up – Johnny Evans with 30 points off 18.9

Third – Dave Phillips with 29 points off 20.6

Nearest the Pin on the 5th was Alan Barwick and on the 12th was Trevor Baker

The Guest Prize was won by Jackie Henderson with an outstanding 41 points off 25 (and having witnessed her drives, one of our members was overheard mumbling something about the introduction of DNA testing!)

We’re back at Oliva Nova on September 27th next week, where we’re hopeful the greens will be playable after this week’s extensive hollow tining, and the format will be individual stableford, registration will be the normal 8:15 and details can be found on our web site – pegogolfsociety.net.
