Pego Golf Society – Oliva Nova – November 8th
A rather cool start to the day quickly gave way to very sunny and warm conditions, tempered a little by an often brisk breeze, the former making for very pleasant playing conditions and the latter accounting for our universally very average (and for some of us pathetic – in the ‘contemptuous pity’ sense) scores.
Although the yellow tees were well forward today the general softness of the very damp fairways contributed to the course playing long, but on the plus side the greens were very holding.
There were, once again, three prize categories and the winners were announced by our Captain, Jim Gillies, as follows:
Category 1 (Handicaps up to 11.4)
Winner – John Chessher with 33 stableford points off a handicap of 4.9
Runner up – Malcolm Wise, also with 33 points but off the higher handicap of 6.2
Category 2 (Handicaps from 11.5 to 18.4)
Winner – Len Wisbey with 35 points off 12.1
Runner up – Ron Webb with 32 points off 17.5
Category 3 (Handicaps over 18.4)
Winner – A surprised Bill Pike (for back-to-back wins) with 31 points off 18.6
Runner up – An astonished Johnnie Evans with 30 points off 19.4
We had two matches in the latter stages of our Summer Knockout Competition, one being a quarter-final, in which Colin Foster overcame Brian West by 3 & 2 to meet a potential nemesis in the shape of Stevie Patton in their semi-final. The winner of that semi-final will go on to meet the winner of today’s semi, the very consistent Dave Collins, who upset bookie’s favourite Martin Gates by winning 1 up.
We had three guests this week, with Roger Brown’s 34 points being enough to win the Guest Prize.
The 2’s pot was shared by guest Keith Wiggins and Martin Gates.
There were 99 Balls in the Water and the pot went to Donna Green.
The Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Martin Gates on the 3rd and by Peter Chapman on the 13th.
Next Week’s competition will be on November 15th and is scheduled to be the inaugural Blacktower Challenge Cup, recently added to our ‘major’ competition schedule. We will be at our normal venue of Oliva Nova and registration will be at our usual time of 8:15, details can be found on our web site – pegogolfsociety.net.
