Ken hangs on in there to take Spring Trophy

In the second and final round of our Spring Trophy competition, Ken Perkins was the only one of four first round leaders to maintain his challenge for the first of this year’s major trophies. The first round was played at El Bosque and last Friday’s second round at Oliva Nova saw Ken return a net 79, off 18 handicap, to give him a 36-hole aggregate total of 155, a score good enough to take first prize in the 36-hole medal competition.

Martin Gates, who was five shots adrift at the start of the round, had a net 75 on his home course to give him a 156 total and runners-up spot.

Dick Temperton carried the flag for the Division 2 players in the non-divisional competition with a net 75 for a total of 157 and third place. Equal fourth were Mike Cuerden and Brian Redfearn, a further two shots adrift.

The 18-hole event was a competition in its own right. Brian Redfearn, Martin Gates and Roger Mallaburn took the first three Division 1 places, and Dick Temperton, Fred Betteridge and Bill Russell headed the field in Division 2.

Nearest the pin winners were Clive Wright and Mike Cuerden.
