Holly Week Valencia Marina
April 2 - April 9

València‘s Semana Santa Marinera kicks off every year with a traditional retreta – an exciting announcement of the festivities to come. From then on, the activity doesn’t cease. On the 4 April, it’s Holy Tuesday, and you can’t miss the dramatic meeting between Dolorosa Coronada and Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno at Reales Atarazanas.
On Maundy Thursday, the 6 April, all participating groups come together to visit the monuments, which takes them from parish to parish. And on Good Friday, the action moves to the coast, where a prayer is held. In the afternoon, the Station of the Cross takes place, ending with the famous Santo Entierro ceremony. On Saturday, don’t go to bed before midnight, as at the stroke of 12 it’s time for the Resurrection, where people throw plates, glasses and water from their balconies and there is a display of fireworks and petal throwing. The fun is certainly contagious.
The following day, the excitement continues with Procesión del Encuentro comprising biblical characters, plenty of applause, and pretty flowers. The Resurrección parade ends the celebrations, although you’ll still be able to head to Plaza de la Cruz to see the brotherhoods stand around their flags. Don’t miss this Event of National Tourist Interest.
