What should be carried in your vehicle in Spain

Go Local - March 2012

Tony Cabban on behalf of NHW Javea inquired from Neighborhood Watch Spain what should be carried in your vehicle in Spain. The answer from Manuel Vera , the liaison officer of Torrevieja police was:
DOCUMENTSTO BE CARRIED in a motor vehicle:
 - Driver's Licence. (In the case of EU citizens from other EU countries, they can continue to use the drivers licence from their own country (although I would strongly recommend that they change to a Spanish licence for various reasons).
 - A Resident's Certificate (where applicable) and proof of address here in Spain. (Non-residents will be obliged to pay any fines immediately, in cash!).
 - "Permiso de Ciruclación" (the 'grey coloured booklet'  - registration document.
 - The "ITV" (MoT) document showing records of vehicle's tests and the window sticker.
 - Vehicle insurance document and receipt of payment.
Basically, documents required to be carried in a vehicle relate to the identity of the driver and address, ability to drive (Drivers Licence), and the documents which relate to the vehicle (ID of vehicle, ITV and insurance).
EQUIPMENT TO BE CARRIED:
 - 2 x reflective triangles.
 - 2 x reflective jackets.
 -  One set of replacement light bulbs. (Whilst this law is actually still in place, it is most unlikely that any police offer would ask for these nor issue a fine as they recognise that these days, motor vehicles are so sophisticated that most drivers would not be able to change a light bulb anyway)."

Bella is a lovely green-eyed Tortoiseshell kitten, rescued from the small mountain in Oliva's old town. She is probably 6 monthbella00174r2 old, now sterilised and has obviously been dumped on the mountain to fend for herself as she is used to be with humans. She is both goodlooking and friendly - and - best of all - she will like all Calico and Tortoiseshell cats bring good luck to you and your family!

Alfas

The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir was one of 3 English speaking choirs participating in the International Choir Festival which took place between 1st and 4th March at Alfaz Del Pi and other towns in the area. The festival was organised by the Norwegian Coral Association and Alfaz Ayuntamiento. Three choirs came from Norway, three were Spanish from the local area and The Lady Elizabeth Show Choir and the Big Fish Rock Choir joined the CBMVC as representatives of the English speaking community. The Festival was a great success and the Director Erland Dalen hoped that a similar event could be organised for next year.

Spanish gardens in March

Go Local - March 2012

gardeninginspainMarch can be a challenge

For many February was a difficult gardening month. Nights were mainly cold, with frosts well below zero in many gardens even less than a kilometre from the coast and many exotic plants were blackened. Night time winds caused air frosts even when thermometers showed above zero so plants in high up on apartment terraces had leaves burnt.Fruit trees suffered also. Avocados in Andalusia and citrus and stone fruits further north.

But in day time it was glorious sunshine with sunbathing temperatures by midday. Really enjoyable weather for gardeners. But many plants were confused, especially as we have not a drop of rain.

March has started the same way but much needs to be done to have gardens looking good by Easter and early summer.. Luckily we have got past the new moon without an exceptional frost so now new blackening of plants is likely – what can be burnt is already brown.

Some things urgent in March

Finish preparing the vegetable plot for spring plantings. Potatoes need planting this Friday 9th March or a week later on the 17th, 18th or 19th according to the lunar calendar.

Ensure that over wintered vegetables do not dry out.

Give roses their final pruning and a good heap of horse manure around each plant.

Finish the pruning of olive trees and give a first insecticide fungicide and foliar feed. Some leaves have been dried out by the log period of night frosts.

Trim off burned growth on orange trees and prune the centre of bushes to let the sun and air in. Once you can see flower buds forming a thinning of other branches can be made. Full instructions for looking after your citrus trees and soime fifty others grown in Mediterranean gardens will be found in our book 'Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain – From strawberries to oranges and water melons'.

Trim back burnt growth on groundcover plants, shrubs, climbers and flowering trees.

Trim hedges.

Water fruiting trees especially those planted during the winter to ensure that flower and leaf buds do not dry out.

Sow summer vegetables in seed trays or pots to prepare plantlets for planting out in May in colder areas. In warmer spots on the coast this will have been done a two months ago.

Asparagus corms are still around in agricultural cooperatives if you want to fill in gaps in your bed, or indeed start one.

Grape vines can still be planted. Recently we discovered Viveros Canet – This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it a third generation grape vine nursery established in 1910 when they imported American vines to replace those lost throughout Spain and France from decease. We purchased and planted ten extra Muscadet vines to increase our production of raisins for walking snacks and the making next December of the Christmas cake, pudding and mince meat. Holistic gardening is about planning for the future.

In 'Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain' we introduced the idea of a 'Ten-Tub veggie garden'. (apologies for spacings but the computer is playing up!). Our trial one using ten black plastic builders buckets has done well over winter. We have never been out of fresh salad crops. It has been interesting to discover that friends who enjoyed reading our booklet 'Living well from our Mediterranean garden'- see 'Our books' – have started their own versions in recent months. Some in gardens, some on apartment terraces.

Thinking of apartment terraces it is time to brighten up terraces and balconies before Easter. Our book 'Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style' includes numerous photographs showing what can be achieved and an illustrated plant guide showing the hundred plants most suited to sunny and shaded locations.

What can still be planted in gardens is summer flowering lily bulbs for which there good offers at present. Although we have some wonderful clumps of daffodils at present the clumps of summer lilies will be more exotic. We will discuss some aspects of planting strategies in our next posting.

So have a great month gardening with plenty of colour and produce for Easter and beyond.

castillo 3_29022012

One of the most suggestive tours in Buñolgoes through the medieval quarter of the Castle. Fort built between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, on a rocky promontory also protected by a wall which gives access to the weapons square in its north tower. Entering this fortress will make you go back in time, travelling to ancient times. The Buñol Castle is located between the pit of the river and the gorge of Borrunes. Inside you can see still part of the Gothic palace, the town palace remains, recently restored, and the Church of the Salvador. These enclosures are separated by the tower of Homage which consists of a single room.

Do not miss it!
