Consulate and Tourism partners work together to support British nationals 29th May 2012

Go Local - June 2012

consulatelogoThe British Consul has held an open meeting with around 40 representatives from the UK's top tourism companies to discuss how to work together to support British nationals on the Costa Blanca.

The event started with a presentation from the British Consul, Paul Rodwell, in which he outlined what the Consulate can and cannot do to help British nationals in distress. He explained that the Consulate can help in case of serious assault, arrest or hospitalisation, but that they can only visit someone in hospital if they are alone or particularly vulnerable. He also explained that when a British national is arrested, the Consulate will try to make contact and visit, but they can't do anything to get that person out of jail or give legal advice.

State aid: Commission approves restructuring aid for the sale of Spanish
Banco CAM to Banco Sabadell

Brussels, 30 May 2012 – The European Commission has concluded that restructuring aid granted by Spain to Banco CAM in the context of the sale of its banking activities to Banco Sabadell was in line with EU state aid rules. The Commission found that the restructuring plan adequately addresses the problems that led to the bail-out of the bank in July 2011. The disappearance of Banco CAM from the market as an independent entity, the sale of its banking business to Banco Sabadell and the deep restructuring foreseen should ensure long-term viability without continued state support, whilst avoiding undue distortions of competition.

In this month's podcast, the Property Inspector investigates his biggest mystery yet: the ongoing financial crisis and the rumours of Greece's exit from the euro. Will the country really leave the single currency? What does that mean for real estate markets? Could it be the end of the world - or even worse, the end of buying property?

The inspector tracks down Ross Michaelides from Buy and Sell Estate Agency in Crete to uncover the answers.

The British_Consul_Director_of_Fundar_and_representatives_of_local_charitiesLast week, the Valencian regional government’s volunteer support organisation, Fundar, held a focus group with some of the local charities in the area to give Fundar the opportunity to understand better the work the charities carry out and to look at how to support them in what they do. The focus group was chaired by the British Consul, Paul Rodwell, and attended by the new director of Fundar, Laura Chorro. The focus group looked at which of the many services that Fundar offers would be particularly useful for the local English speaking charities and how to develop some of these services to support the charities in a more effective manner. The charities seemed keen to use Fundar to get more Spanish volunteers involved in their work and to help them to integrate even further into their local communities.

Euro Woes Deepen

Go Local - May 2012

Confidence in the Eurozone has received a further blow as the European Central Bank has stopped offering liquidity to some Greek banks that it does not consider solvent.  The move by the ECB is in line with the EU treaty; however the headlines will be an untimely blow as the EU group scrambles to keep the Euro together.  The proposed new elections in Greece on June 17 look set to be won by parties favouring opposition to austerity measures which would likely lead to Greece crashing out of the Euro in a disorderly fashion.  The market is naturally already pricing in this scenario and the Euro has depreciated significantly and the borrowing costs in Spain and Italy have moved higher as contagion worries increase.  There is real concern that a run on Greek banks ahead of the elections could tip the balance.  Contingencies for a Greek exit are rapidly taking shape-broker Icap is already set up to trade the Drachma in the eventuality of a Greek exit.
