Surge in demand for luxury property as Spain's new Residency law is given green light

News Spain - July & August

Leading luxury international estate agency Lucas Fox has registered a tripling in enquiries from non-EU property investors following the Spanish government's approval of a new law to fast track Residency permits. The company, which is based in Barcelona, is receiving up to 30 enquiries a day from foreign investors, mainly from the Far East, India and Russia. The new legislation states that investors outside of the European Union who spend half a million euros or more on property in Spain will be granted automatic residency for a maximum of 12 months before having to renew it. The law is expected to be enforced by the end of the summer.

Don't be blinkered by property prices!

News Spain - June 2013

Whilst property buyers in Spain are benefitting from reduced prices and getting some truly superb bargains, certain properties suffer significant structural defects, the repair cost of which often proves prohibitive for the bargain hunter (i.e. typically the buyer that is on a very limited budget anyway). The consequence of not being aware of these defects at the time of purchase can be quite disastrous as the very person that cannot readily afford essential works ends up being lumbered with a problem property. I am aware of some estate agents that are falsely using the excuse of the Spanish crisis and property price reductions to shift property that is known to suffer serious structural defect (the real reason for the very low asking price).

Investigators say Spain is number one for 'benefit fraud abroad'

News Spain - June 2013

fraud-spainWith an estimated 800,000 Britons living in Spain, it's the number one country in the world for Britons committing 'benefit fraud abroad'. More allegations are made about people living in Spain whilst continuing to receive UK benefits than in any other country where British expatriates live.

So investigators from the Department of Work & Pension have today (17 June) issued a fresh appeal to British expats to report anyone they suspect of fraudulently claiming UK benefits whilst living in Spain, to help stop taxpayers' money being wasted on benefit thieves when it could be spent on valuable public services such as hospitals and schools.

Medieval Market in La Nucia - 5, 6 and 7 July

News Spain - June 2013

nurcia-marketLa Nucía returns once again to the Middle Ages to celebrate its 308th birthday; on the 9th of July in the Year of our Lord 1705 an official document was signed that established La Nucia as an independent settlement. Instead of a huge cake with far too many candles, the town has decided to hold a Medieval Market. For the ninth year running, the streets between the square in front of the Town Hall down to the old "lavadero" (where the women of the village used to wash their clothing) will be decorated with flags and bunting, and lined with stalls to create a medieval setting.
