Imprisoned in Spain – Terry Daniels

News Spain - Dec 2013

tdanielsTerry Daniels was accused of smuggling a million pounds worth of cocaine from Brazil to Spain in 1997. She had been working in Brazil with her boss, a nightclub manager, and was travelling back to Spain with him when he was caught with the drugs in his suitcase. Terry maintains her innocence and said she had no idea that he was carrying the drugs. But a Spanish court prosecuted her on the basis of guilt by association. She served six days in prison before being granted bail, when she then returned to the UK. A number of years passed and it appeared that the Spanish authorities had dropped the case. However, while living in Ireland in 2002 a police check revealed that she was still wanted in Spain. She had been prosecuted in her absence and her sentence (10 years in prison) was still outstanding.

Hundreds of British nationals are currently locked up in prisons across the globe for drug-related offences, often detained for months without trial and facing distressing living conditions. In Spain, consular staff dealt with over 100 drug-related arrests last year alone and drugs offences account for approximately three-quarters of the 172 Brits currently on remand or serving sentences in Spain.

Hat trick man... Levante's Frank Carroll

News Spain - Dec 2013

levantegolfLEVANTE's President Frank Carroll has been celebrating after notching a hat trick of victories in one round at Oliva Nova. In the society's Autumn Trophy – a 36-hole medal competition in which the first round was played the previous week at La Sella – players once again had to cope with near gale force winds. Repair work on Oliva's greens added to the problems and produced high scoring. But Frank's steady play meant he successfully defended the one shot lead he held after the first round.

A Christmas Fayre - Alicante 17 to 20 December

News Spain - Dec 2013

fairalicanteRight in the middle of Alicante town, the weekend before Christmas, you can take in a real live Nativity scene as part of a craft fair.  A craft fair with "Artesanía de Autor" (craftsmen selling their own work), live music, jugglers, children's games and workshops, a tavern and other food stalls in the Plaza Gabriel Miró, from 19 to 23 December. The stalls and the nativity scene are set up under the incredible rubber trees - think of the pot plant in Granny's parlour, but then about 100 foot high and with a trunk so big that three people can just clasp hand to hand around the trunk.  That's where you will find Maria holding the baby while Joseph is working as a carpenter, and a page takes down children's wishes for presents from the Three Kings.  Near the Nativity scene the visitor will find goats, chickens, rabbits, little pigs and very young donkeys - all the inhabitants of a small farm yard.

La Nucia weekly craft fair to stop.

News Spain - Dec 2013

Well, we tried. Last February, Amata, the regional craft association, started a weekly craft fair, Sundays only, in La Nucia.  Every Sunday (apart from the hot summer months) between 10 and 15 people came to set up a stall, with wooden toys, glass, ceramics, leather - all made by the people at the stall.  Genuine craft work - nothing imported, nothing from a factory.  A sort of open air gallery.  So this week we stop - sorry about that.

PEGO GOLF SOCIETY

News Spain - Dec 2013

olivagolfdec2013Tuesday 3rd of December, we played a Singles Stableford Competition at Oliva Nova, and today we had a total of 42 players. In that 42 players, we had three guests, namely John Guest, Brian and Feli Baybut.(Good Player). We were greeted today with cloudy rainy skies, so really not great conditions for the game of golf. The rain managed to stay off until midway during the back nine, when it became just too heavy, causing half of the field to abandon simply.
